The Nomadic Project

On  November 13th, 2005, Kristin Abraham, along with her husband AlfonsoLlamas set out on a yearlong journey across America, spending a week in each ofthe lower 48 states, living out of their Honda Element SUV.

The Nomadic Project, an ambitious endeavor, celebratesa love for the arts. Kristin is recording her experiences through painting,while Alfonso creates a visual and musical record featuring still and actionphotography, and original music.

“The entire trip is a conceptualart project,” said Abraham, 22, a former art teacher in Fort Myers, FL.

A  significant part of the project involves Abraham’s paintings. As she creates apiece in one state, she leaves it at a gallery in the next state. “By taking aninspiration from one state and placing it in its neighboring state, borders areblurred, and ideals shared. The connection is much like a pencil smudge.”Abraham explains.

“Ourgoal is to celebrate the similarities and diversities of the various lifestylesthat we observe throughout the country,” adds Llamas.

Abrahamworks in acrylic paint due to the fast drying rate and convenient cleanup. Shedescribes her artistic style as symbolic realism, and will sell or loan thepaintings in her “Nomadic” series.

Anotherimportant aspect of the journey is the involvement of the people in which theycome in contact with. Since the exhibit is anexperience with people and places, this input from the community will be avital part of the 2007 exhibit.

Llamaswill be creating the soundtrack and video documentary for the exhibit.

Upon completion of the journey, the traveling exhibit will visit each state,following the route of the trip. The exhibit will be an experience for viewers,featuring all the aspects of the journey, including sketches, photographs andtheir mode of transportation.
