HeartBeats works by Bateau Laveau's artists

We’re all achingly familiar with the clichés associated with the heart. While intellect and reasoning are “connected” to the mind, those aspects connected to emotions are loosely referred to as being “of the heart”.
In short, we associate the heart with authenticity of feeling. When we choose to “follow the heart rather than the head”, the implication is that we choose to trust our inner truth above logical thought.
The heart is the level at which we connect to our worlds – both outer and inner. This makes it an obvious theme for artists to explore. Art may be described as the heart of society, an individual heartbeat, contributing to the whole.
The Bateau Laveau artists Bevan Davis, Thembinkosi Kohli and Thembinkosi Mzinzi interpret this theme from different metaphoric perspectives. They depict the twists and turns of the complex vascular system twists through the body and, implicitly, through life. In a more abstract approach, they interpret the heartbeat of a city’s nightlife in compositions throbbing with color, movement and rhythm. They capture the pulsations of the heart, the dynamics of its workings and all its power. They also reflect the positive and negative influences that impact on the heart: the experiences of love, happiness and pleasure as well as the scars inflicted by the painful experiences of the past.
