[Exhibition] - [Saturday 10th, January 2004]

Baltimore's Betsy the Fingerpainting-Chimp, A Retrospective of Her Work
A Colorful Collection of Works By Betsy the Chimp, the Baltimore Zoo's Finger-Painting Primate During Those Fabulous Fifties
JANUARY 10-MARCH 21, 2004
1808 Maryland Avenue
Baltimore, MD 21201 USA

"Baltimore's Betsy the Finger-Painting Chimp: A Retrospective of Her Work" will be exhibited at the American Dime Museum from January 10 until March 21, 2004.

The exhibition includes 13 colorful finger-paintings by Betsy the Chimp (1951-60), the Baltimore Zoo's finger-painting primate during the fabulous fifties and is comprised of works on loan from the Baltimore Zoo and private collections as well as from
the American Dime Museum's permanent collection. Baltimore luminaries including former governor and mayor William Donald Schaefer, "Hairspray" filmmaker John Waters (also a member of the American Dime Museum's board of advisers), and American Visionary Art Museum founder Rebecca Hoffberger have contributed their remembrances of Betsy's career to the exhibition.

Betsy's finger-painting attracted international attention in the 1950s; she appeared on network television and was profiled in numerous publications. Betsy the Chimp's abstract compositions - bearing titles such as "Red Witch Besieged by Vampires"and "Alligator Chasing Ducks While Flamingo Watches" - were critiqued by Salvador Dali and likened to works by Paul Klee, Pablo Picasso, and Jackson Pollack. While Betsy was alive and painting, the sale of her paintings generated $3,500 for the Baltimore Zoo. Betsy died unexpectedly in 1960; her obituary headline read "Betsy, Zoo's Internationally Recognized Painter, Is Dead.''

The American Dime Museum, founded in 1999, is the world's only exhibition space which recreates a 19th museum collection filled with odd, unusual, bizarre, and curious displays - whatever the 19th century public would pay ten cents to see. The American Dime Museum is open Wednesday through Friday, Noon- 3 pm and Saturday and Sunday, Noon- 5 pm. Admission is $5 for adults, $3 for children aged 6-12 and no charge for well-behaved children under 6. For more information, please contact Richard Horne at 410 230 0263 or
