New York : Museum for African Art and the Cathedral of St. John the Divine : Season South Africa
[TableauxEnLigne.com] - [Exhibition] - [Wednesday 15th, September 2004]

In the decade since the advent of democracy, a generation of artists who are challenging the frontiers of artistic expression, both visually and intellectually, has come to the fore.

From mid-September to early January, Season South Africa, a visual and performing arts program, is being presented by the Museum for African Art and the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in New York that will challenge general perceptions of South African art practice and performance.

Visual Arts: Personal Affects: Power and Poetics in Contemporary South African Art, features works from 17 South African contemporary artists, commissioned specifically for the exhibition and mainly created as site-specific works.

Performing Arts: The celebrated lyric theater company Dimpho Di Kopane will be staging five weeks of performances of four different productions.

THE CATHEDRAL OF ST. JOHN THE DIVINE

The Cathedral of St. John the Divine is the largest cathedral and the largest gothic building in the world. Under construction for 111 years, it is also an unfinished building, with approximately one-third yet to be completed. The Cathedral’s mission is also a lofty one, extending well beyond that of a conventional Cathedral. Its charter states that it is to be “a house of prayer for all people and a unifying center of intellectual light and leadership.” The Cathedral is considered one of the landmark institutions in New York and a cherished civic and community institution.
